1929年１月25日、ペンシルヴァニア州フィラデルフィア生まれ。
ワシントンのハワード大学で音楽を専攻し、R&Bバンドを足掛かりにプロの道に進む。’50年代前半を、タッド・ダメロン、ライオネル・ハンプトン、アール・ボスティックらの楽団で過ごした後、’56年にディジー・ガレスピー楽団に参加。ソリストとして頭角を現す一方、作編曲者としても楽団に貢献。初期の作曲〈ステイブルメイツ〉は、マイルス・デイヴィスも取り上げた。そして、評価を決定づけたアルバム『ニューヨーク・シーン』で、後にジャズ・スタンダードの代表曲となる〈ウィスパー・ノット〉を発表。’58年にアート・ブレイキー&ジャズ・メッセンジャーズの音楽監督に就くのに前後して、〈クリフォードの思い出〉や〈アロング・ケイム・ベティ〉などの佳曲も創出。続けて書かれた〈ブルース・マーチ〉と〈アー・ユー・リアル?〉によって、ジャズ・メッセンジャーズを黄金時代に導いている。さらに、’59年からカーティス・フラーやアート・ファーマーと“ジャズテット”を組むと、ゴルソン・ハーモニーの粋を尽くした〈ファイヴ・スポット・アフター・ダーク〉や〈キラー・ジョー〉などのヒッツも誕生。ハード・バップ全盛期に深い足跡を残した。その後’70年代後半まで映画やテレビの仕事を続けるが、’80年代から演奏活動を再開。ソロ活動のほか“ジャズテット”やオール・スター・ジャズ・メッセンジャーズを再編するなど活躍してきた。それが’04年、スティーヴン・スピルバーグ監督の映画『ターミナル』に、名サックス奏者としてありのままで出演。奇想天外なストーリーの結末を締めくくる役回りで、その存在感を強烈に印象づけた。
