アメリカの作曲家で、ロシア・ユダヤ系の移民の息子として、 1898年9月26日ニューヨークで生まれた。1937年7月11日、脳腫瘍のため、ハリウッドにて逝去。
10代の終わりからポピュラーソングの作曲を始め、作詞を手掛ける兄のアイラ・ガーシュイン (Ira
Gershwin) と組んで、数々のヒットミュージカルを作曲した。1935年初演のフォーク・オペラ『ポーギーとベス』(Porgy
and Bess )は大成功をおさめ、アメリカ音楽の古典となっている。劇中で歌われる「サマータイム」はポピュラーソングのスタンダードナンバーとして広く親しまれている。
