モダンテナーの創始者と呼ばれる。独特のブレス奏法によってウォームな響きを聴かせる。幼いころからヴァイオリンを弾き、長じてピアノに転向。無声映画の演奏の仕事をはじめる。（ピートはカウント・ベイシー、アルバート・アモンズと並ぶブギウギスタイルのピアノの巨匠）フランキー・トランバウアー
の「Singin' the Blues」に興味を持っていた彼はバッド・ジョンソン
に会い、サックスに目覚め、程なく 「Young Family Band」でサックスを演奏するようになる。1940年からデューク・エリントンのバンドに3年間在団。独立しての活動を続け、1964年渡欧。デンマーク
、オランダなどで活動。死の直前まで演奏活動、1973年アムステルダムで没。 |
