1932年1月14日ノースカロライナ州ダーラム生まれ。
5歳の頃から独学でドラムを始め､空軍に入隊した51〜55年に正式に学ぶチャンスを得る。ジェローム・リチャードソンのコンボ、クインシー・ジョーンズ・ビッグバンドで活躍。その後,デューク・エリントン、カウント・ベイシー、ジミー・スミス、ウェス・モンゴメリ、ビル・エヴァンス、オスカー・ピーターソン、エラ・フィッツジェラルド、アレサ・フランクリン、サラ・ヴォーン、ペギー・リー、シャルル・アズナブール等、ジャズからポップスまで数多くのミュージシャンやヴォーカリストと共演。69年に初めてのヴォーカル・アルバム『風のささやき』(Skye)を制作、ドラムスとヴォーカルを両輪にした音楽生活を始めた。「ナット・キング・コール以降、最も素晴らしい男性ヴォーカリスト」とも呼ばれ、これまでに数枚のヴォーカル・アルバムを発表。73年と89年にはグラミー賞の男性ベスト・ポップ・ヴォーカルにノミネートされる。 |
